FLIGHT TEAM ROLES

 

Team members perform different roles. Teams can distribute roles among team members as appropriate. However, successful teams identify the following:

  • Teacher 1: Principal Investigator:
    • Responsible for monitoring team progress and making sure all deadlines are met.
    • Responsible for project implementation within the team.
    • Responsible for addressing problems, concerns or questions raised by opportunity staff.
    • Responsible for managing all communications between NASA and the flight team (including NASA mentor)
    • Assist in writing Test Equipment Data Package (TEDP)
  • All Teachers: Mission Specialists:
    • Responsible for the project and the rest of the school, community,  and the local press, etc.
    • Responsible for contributing to the successful completion of project (including participation in writing the proposal, making sure project is built and functional, flying project, and writing final report).
    • Other duties as assigned (project leader, materials specialist (scrounge), ground based research team, alternate contact, project historian or documentation specialist, project status writer, follow-on and outreach specialist, community liaison or project administration).
    • Integrate the investigation into the curriculum.
    • Collaborate on the final report.
    • All members of the team will be responsible for updating and maintaining their e-Folio.
  • NASA Mentor
    • Give advice and provide direction.
    • Monitor the investigation’s progress.
    • Assess the team’s understanding of the investigation.
    • Responsible for writing the TEDP with help from the flight team.
    • Evaluate the safety aspects of the investigation.
    • Respond to team questions and suggest resources for the team.
    • The mentor can recommend grounding the investigation if safety or other issues arise.
    • Visit the flight team’s NES School before TEDP deadline
  • Alternate Teacher (Mission Specialist)
    • This teacher will fly in the event that one of the primary educators is unable to fly.
    • Same responsibilities as described in the Mission Specialist section, above.
    • Must attend all events and submit all paperwork as the flight team.
