CREATING A PROPOSAL

TYPES OF PROPOSALS

Proposals fall into one of two categories:

1.   Proposals which DO NOT use Human test subjects (HTS)

  • Proposals are not accepted for vertebrate animals - if you are interested in an invertebrate proposal, please see the information given under administrative requirements.
  • You will be asked on your submission if your experiment is a free float.  Your experiment is a free float if it does not stay bolted/strapped to the floor during flight. Examples:

    • An experiment tethered to the floor that will "float up" during reduced gravity is considered a free float.
    • An experiment that will be held and released during reduced gravity is a free float.
    • If you are going to float something that will remain contained inside an apparatus that has been secured to the aircraft, it is NOT a free float.
  • Proposal Selection Criteria

2.   Proposals which use Human test subjects or vertebrate animals ARE NOT ACCEPTED FOR THIS PROGRAM

  • Definition of Research Involving Human Testing: Research is Human Subject research when (as part of your experiment) you record or retain any of the following from a human subject:
    • Physiological or Psychological data
    • Human Factors data
    • Feedback
  • Examples of human subject data:
    • blood pressure
    • heart rate
    • serum creatinine level
    • eye movement
    • error rate in a pointing exercise
    • ease of movement in a specific glove
    • strength of muscle contractions during treadmill exercise
    • answers to a feelings and attitudes questionnaire

As you can see, we are not just talking about experimenting on a human subject, but we also include observing a human reaction.
